How to use a real-time voice changer in Zoom, Meet, Teams and Discord

Nirmal Karaoke can send your voice effects, Auto-Tune and music into a call. This guide shows the three steps: install a free virtual audio cable, send the studio's output to it, and choose it as the microphone in your call app.

Why you need a virtual audio cable

Web pages cannot create a microphone on their own. A browser can play sound to an output device, but a call app such as Zoom, Meet, Teams or Discord only listens to input devices. A virtual audio cable bridges the gap. It appears to your computer as a playback device and as a microphone at the same time, and whatever is played into one end comes out of the other.

Nirmal Karaoke sends its finished output to that cable, and your call app listens to the other end of the cable as if it were a microphone. That is how your effected voice, Auto-Tune, backing music and soundboard sounds reach the other people on the call.

What you need

  • A desktop or laptop computer. Phones cannot expose a virtual microphone to other apps, so this feature is desktop-only.
  • Desktop Chrome or Edge.
  • A free virtual audio cable: VB-Cable on Windows or BlackHole on Mac.
  • A microphone, and headphones so you do not hear a feedback echo.

Step by step

Step 1: install the virtual audio cable

On Windows, install VB-Cable. On Mac, install BlackHole. Both are free to download from the links above. If your computer asks you to restart after installing, do so before continuing so the new audio device is available to your browser and your call app.

Step 2: send the studio to the cable

Open the Nirmal Karaoke studio and allow the microphone. Go to the Mixer and find the "Calls & meetings" card. Under it, choose CABLE Input as the output device (with BlackHole on Mac, choose the matching BlackHole device), then press Send to call.

From that moment, the studio's program mix, which contains your voice with its effects and any music or soundboard sounds you play, goes into the cable. You keep hearing yourself on your own headphones.

Step 3: choose the cable as your microphone

In Zoom, Meet, Teams or Discord, open the audio or microphone settings and set the microphone to CABLE Output. With BlackHole, pick the BlackHole device as the microphone instead. Speak or sing in the studio and the call app should show input level. Other people on the call now hear what the studio sends.

Tips for a clean sound

  • Wear headphones. Without them your microphone can pick up the speakers and cause an echo.
  • Try a different voice while you talk. Voices, Auto-Tune and effects are processed live, so you can switch presets in the middle of a call.
  • If the sound is noisy, set noise suppression to Low in the Mixer and tune the noise level for your room.
  • If something sounds wrong or laggy, close other heavy browser tabs and press Reset all in the Mixer to return every setting to normal.

Use voice effects honestly

The voices in Nirmal Karaoke are original styles shaped by pitch, tone and effects. They are not designed to imitate, or named after, any real person. Please do not use them to pass yourself off as someone else on a call, and let the people you speak with know when you are using a voice effect where it matters.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything to use Nirmal Karaoke?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Only the call-output feature needs a free virtual audio cable on your computer: VB-Cable on Windows or BlackHole on Mac.

Does it work on a phone?

The studio, voices and soundboard work on phones, but phones cannot provide a virtual microphone to other apps, so sending your voice to a call is desktop-only.

Which browser should I use?

Use desktop Chrome or Edge for call output. Other modern browsers run many studio features, but this guide relies on Chrome or Edge.

Will I hear myself while the call app uses the cable?

Yes. The studio sends your effected voice and music to the virtual audio cable while you keep hearing yourself on your own headphones. Use headphones to avoid an echo.

Can I sound like a specific celebrity?

No. The voices are original styles shaped by pitch, tone and effects, and impersonating real people is not something the studio offers. Please use voice effects honestly.

What if something sounds wrong or laggy?

Use headphones, close other heavy tabs, set noise suppression to Low, and press Reset all in the Mixer to return every setting to normal.
